About the SHQ mode in my compressors

i sent out emails for updates for my Rayphlex compressor yesterday, completing all of my comps. now they all have instructions and skins included, to allow the program switching buttons to work on skins with N4.

i want to make one thing clear because i’ve had a few emails about this, but after you install these skins you are not supposed to ever open the compressor programs with the ‘finder’ button inside N4. you open them as their own plug-in (a custom copy of n4), and then you use the buttons/switches on the skin to select the various versions of the comp (hard/soft knee, lite/full/shq quality levels). the program switching happens without losing your settings on the controls (nebula normally resets all controls to default upon switching programs). the only thing you still use the finder for is to load the pass-through/tone programs.

about SHQ and why i offer it- yes it can take a long time to render using SHQ. it’s optional and the difference can be pretty subtle. the reason i’ve been providing SHQ programs for something like 6-7 years now, with my comps, is because nebula comp programs are pretty much always using really shortened kern/impulse lengths. this has always been required because they need faster progrates to allow for the necessary faster response to input levels. but you can’t get that with longer kern lengths, so very short lengths have always been the norm. they got shortened even more once using TIMED mode became the norm, which allows even faster progrates, and removes the artifacts that used to plague nebula comps. the problem with timed mode is it uses lots of CPU, so to get those benefits you need even shorter kern lengths (which use less CPU) than was used before when FREQD mode was the norm (and there were artifacts).

the shortened kerns don’t allow for as accurate a reproduction of frequencies under 1khz though. and this is going to be true with any compressor program using them, not just mine. it’s just a law of nebula/convolution in general. so my SHQ programs have always used more full, longer kern lengths, usually around 80ms, which allow a better reproduction of lower freqs. this can still be a subtle difference as the most obvious stuff is below 100hz. but the most obvious case is with the natural high pass filtering type of effect you normally see with just about any hardware. it simply can’t be reproduced with the kinds of short kern/impulse length settings typically used in nebula comps.

so i think this round of n4 skin updates is important to anyone who was interested in trying to use my SHQ programs for rendering but was always annoyed by the controls resetting in nebula when switching programs. now that doesn’t happen and all you have to do is click one button. again, shq difference can still be pretty subtle, but these skins also allow you to mix with lite mode and just switch to full mode for rendering if you choose to do that instead (which adds the subtle harmonics back in). really, rendering with any option is fine and it could even make sense to use lite mode in some cases if you want the cleanest/most transparent result with no harmonics.

First off, if you’re still using Nebula 3, you can completely ignore this update, it won’t change anything for you.

With some help from Max I’ve updated my Nebula compressors skins to officially support installing and using the skins that allow program switching by clicking buttons in Nebula 4. This was always possible with the N3 skins but Max found out it can be done in N4 too. So now the skins that were formerly for Nebula 3 only, are replacing the simpler skins that I had made for use with Nebula 4, which don’t allow the program switching. The install of these skins is a little more complicated than it was for those simpler skins, but it’s absolutely worth it.

I’m pretty sure I was told by Acustica a few years ago that the program selection buttons feature that was in my N3 skins, was removed from N4, which is why I originally had the simpler skins made for N4. Really old library gets major update- Tube FM 2 (renamed Tube Radios, Mic’d)

here’s the update info:

• name changed from tube fm 2 to “Tube Radios, Mic’d”
• 48 and 88.2khz sample rates added.
• everything was rebuilt starting from the original tone sweeps, which allowed me to go back and edit all the impulses (thousands of them) to ensure they are properly synced and have smooth fadeouts as well as being able to weed out any bad ones. this process fixes a lot of glitchy type behavior and distortions which would usually happen with hotter inputs. i do think overall this improves the sound in many cases.
• added the ‘bell special’ program which is in stereo and was made by ‘resampling’ one of the main (mono) bell programs through an old philco tube amp with basic EQ controls in a way that produced a stereo effect. this was originally released as a bonus for anyone who bought my ‘tube fm 1-4’ bundle ages and ages ago, and for years it just hasn’t been available. now it’s here! it’s pretty unique among them all because it leans towards treble freqs more.
• all programs in stereo had both channels out of alignment which led to the sound ‘leaning’ towards one side. fixed. they still aren’t perfect and have phase inconsistencies but that’s ‘part of the effect’.
• added the two ‘nebula radio prototype) programs, which were also in the tube fm 1-4 bonuses. these two programs were made from an unknown model of zenith radio (i destroyed it and have no notes about it), and were the first nebula programs i ever made, as a test to see if i could get anything interesting. based on these results i did lots of planning and eventually came up with the tube fm 1 release (now tube radios direct). these two programs are really junky and just not very good but could still be useful as an occasional effect. i’ve included them for ‘historical purposes’.
• all impulses have been edited for length. older nebula programs using the standard NAT sampling templates would typically have impulse with longer lengths than what was actually used by the programs. the programs basically trimmed off the excess with the length setting on the kern page. this meant the full impulses were still being loaded into RAM. this was common in older nebula programs (not just mine). now i’ve edited them to the exact lengths that are actually used, which speeds up load times, and lowers RAM use. they files also take up less storage space.
• harmonic levels have all been rebalanced, usually meaning they got lowered drastically compared to the original release. they’re more authentic this way and sound better. if you want the louder harmonics you can always still use the ‘dist’ control to bring them back up.
• the available controls in the programs have been changed, in accordance with my recent releases.
• manual was touched up.

Old release gets major update- YouRei HP/LP

One of my more popular products over the years, and also one of my first releases, has just got a major update. It’s really a great update and it’s totally free to all who have already bought (even 8 yrs ago).

Here’s what’s been updated:

• 48 and 88.2khz sample rates added.
• some major issues have been fixed with the dynamics. the last update i did actually hurt these programs. whoops! sorry. the programs would ‘freak out’ and get overly distorted in a bad way, much too soon (with lower inputs).
• low end ripples have been removed. these were pretty subtle in the past and only more obvious well below 100hz. but now everything is smooth down there.
• fixed a few phase issues with the hp/lp combo. some combinations of settings of the two controls could result in the high end being rolled off a bit, which was due to the impulses being a bit out of phase.
• lite/clean programs previously were only lacking the harmonics, but the H1 impulses still had dynamics. i’ve removed the dynamics from them now, which lowers the sample count by a lot. this makes the programs load faster, and use less CPU (much more noticeable in the combo HP/LP program). the dynamic effect of those H1 impulses having dynamics is VERY subtle anyway so it doesn’t make much difference in sound.
• clean programs are now not using a smoothing kernel, and they use a program rate that’s twice as slow. both of these changes can be made because of the lack of dynamics in these programs. instead of the smoothing kern, i switched clean programs to use ‘splith’ mode, which causes the first few ms (which contain the main part) of the impulses to actually use timed mode (supposed to be more accurate) instead of freqd. i’ve always thought timed mode didn’t actually seem any better sounding by itself, but could sometimes allow for other benefitial settings. but here when testing, ‘splith’ mode sounded a little cleaner to me.
• because of all the changes made to the lite/clean programs, i’ve renamed them to simply ‘clean’, because i want to put an emphasis on them not simply being ‘less than’ the ‘full’ versions. these are just as valid to use for rendering if you want a clearer, harmonic free, very clean sound.
• completely redid the numbering shown on the hp and lp controls. originally i was sticking with the values shown on the hardware knobs themselves, but the actual results you get from the filters doesn’t really match up with those values in any kind of logical way. so i’ve abandoned the hardware labelling and changed the min/max and in-between values on the controls so that the value you set the controls to will give you something much closer to where the cutoff frequency actually is.
• fixed the labelling on the programs for the LP controls where they said ‘hz’ but should’ve said ‘khz’.
• removed ‘trim’ and ‘dist’ controls from the clean programs since now have neither dynamics or harmonics.
• adjusted the dynamic ‘spacing’ for the impulses in the hp and lp full version programs (but not the combo one). you don’t really need to know what this means, but this is better.
• set the ‘trim’ control to -10dB as default, for all full versions. this is just so if you already have a really hot (close to 0dBFS) signal going into the programs, you won’t get crackling distortions. now if you want more harmonics you’ll have to slowly and carefully increase this control from the -10dB default setting.
• added ‘clean’ and ‘full’ to the program descriptions, so you can tell which program you’re using by looking at the main nebula window now.
• a few other little tweaks to the programs, probably some i’m forgetting.
• updated the manual. changed anything needed to reflect the program changes and did some editing/improving across the whole thing.
